So after a lengthy hiatus I thought it would be nice to post a lil something, starting with The Bug.
The Bug's been producing for years now in a more dancehall direction but his excursions into dubstep have been almost without peer. Comparisons can be drawn with Loefah's unbelievably heavy and sparse beats, though on his upcoming album 'London Zoo' Bug retains his dancehall sensibilities that give the tracks more drive and allow him to create different atmospheres through the various vocalists used, who are all on the dancehall/ragga tip.
Here's a link to a recent pomo mix done by The Bug for BBC 6Mix

Like to chat about Trim for a bit too, he's up to the release of the 4th volume in his Soul Food mixtape series and every volumes better than the last. No links or anything just check the myspace.

Metal is awesome again and most impressive were albums from Despised Icon, Baroness and Between the Buried and Me. I know this is a little old by now but I still haven't heard much that has bettered them.

A Made Up Sound has been releasing lovely minimalist dubstep under the moniker 2562 and his new album Aerial is a fantastic piece of work.

54:49: Curtis Mayfield: I Plan To Stay a Believer (Live)
57:30: Miles Davis: It’s About That Time
Here's what Grievous Angel has to say about the mix and you can go check out his blog and read liner notes for each track and why he chose it and whatnot here.
This time last year I was waaaaay deep into a series of pilgrimages deep into dubstep, a process that is still ongoing, though not as spiritually all-encompassing as it was. And part of my response to the influx of dubstep vibrations that have been flowing into me since 2005 has been a re-connection with deep dub sounds of… Miles Davis. My connection with Miles has always crossed over with dub, electronics and industrial. I got heavily into Miles, especially the electric period but also the Gil Evans orchestral period, at the same time as I got into Cabaret Voltaire – when I was 13, almost 14. It was only a year or so later that I realised how much of an influence he was on Richard Kirk and Stephen Malinder; all I knew was that the sonics and spaces of 2 X 45 were identical to On the Corner. In the same way as the threads connecting from the Cabs to acid to ardkore and thence to dubstep are obvious, for me, the thematic connection from Miles to dubstep is also clear, but it’s more a matter of influence than direct connection.
So it was that when I was asked to do a solo outing in the brilliant Blogariddims series, I almost immediately decided to go on a voyage into Miles – in dub. I was going to include a lot of other fusion artists, but not much that I have in that genre really made the grade, so instead I threw in some of the soul and funk that influenced Miles in this period. And naturally, I used as my raw material much of Bill Laswell’s fabulous Panthalassa CD, which adds a layer of dub and re-edits to Miles’ originals. I simply re-edited and re-dubbed what Laswell did. All in all it’s an appropriate way for Blogariddims series to greet Beltane. I hope you enjoy it.
Next we have a new mix by Various Production. Quite short at 22 mins but full of goodness. The whole gamut from beautiful melodies and vocals through crazy heavy, dirty riddims.

Things have been going pretty well lately. Great new albums being released and its about a month until the Red Bull Music Academy hits Melbourne!
Skream plays here as part of it on Oct. 20th at the Espy which is going to be an absolute killer.
But before that happens Kode9 is making his way out to Australia for the second time and will be hitting Melbourne hard October 9th!

These are going to be two of the best sets on the year, dubstep or otherwise, hands down. If you want to hear more from these guys head over to Barefiles for dozens of Rinse FM sets plus some other random sets n all.
And heres a video clip for Kode9 - Sonic Mutation
Kode9 - Live @ Subtrac Toronto

The Junior Boys have just released their sophomore album and it's a masterful piece of work.
Titled 'So This Is Goodbye' it represents the first substantial body of work done since Johnny Dark left the band. Since he was resonsible for the beats and sequencing on the amazing debut 'Last Exit' you might think Junior Boys would have suffered in this area but instead they've taken the music in a different direction and it works really well for them. Whereas 'Last Exit' had a darker, more schizophrenic edge built more around 2-step style beats and sycncophated rythyms, 'So This Is Goodbye' has ventured down a lighter path that is more structered and conventional. The songs feel warmer and more open, and whilst they may appear simpler in structure to 'Last Exit'; 'So This Is Goodbye' certainly feels like the next step up.

And here are some mp3's from 'Last Exit' and a couple from 'So This Is Goodbye'.

And lastly I thought I'd continue in the new album vein and chat about the upcoming Drumcorps album that's dropping on labels Ad Noiseam and Cock Rock Disco. Even though it might seem a little far away still (release date is Oct. 16th) I'm too excited about it to wait. I'm sure more will be written as the date draws closer.
Drumcorps is the child of notorious breakcore producer Aaron Spectre and mixes together two of the greatest and most insane styles of music around (Grindcore and Breakcore) into an explosive shitfight of blast beats, amens chopped into sushi and shredding riffs. As you can probably imagine this isn't for the weak of heart but I recommend this highly for anyone who's into any kind of heavy or extreme music.
Here are some clips of songs from the upcoming album -
Forgive and Forget
Grist
Down
Botch Up and Die
Could the last one be a swipe at Curl Up and Die? I hope so. I've always considered them nothing better than an average Botch cover band. Ah well I guess they could be playing worse stuff. Anyhoo if those clips simply weren't enough for you heres the Cock Rock Disco free 2006 sampler to download! Containing a song from Drumcorps plus all the other artists on the label, how can you go wrong with a free breakcore sampler!
Track listing is -
Food For Animals - Elephant
About - Think Niles Drink
Duran Duran Duran - Ralez
Dev/Null - Goblin
Next Life - Red Stone
Stunt Rock - I've Really Lost It...
Slepcy - With Charles Bukowski On The Ride
Audiogarde - Mardi Gras
Don Augusto - The House Denominator Factor
Drumcorps - Saddest
Vorpal - Gymnopedie_v1.01
Terminal 11 - Counter Clockwise Chant Pattern
Doormouse - Dizzay
Pisstank - Punching Your Girlfriend's Cunt 'Til it Bleeds
The Assdroids - Stravinsky's "Rite Of Spring" cover

Finally, I think I've been focusing too much on eletronic music. So next post I'm going to talk crap about a bunch of fantastic bands in the drone/instrumental/atmospheric camps such as Kayo Dot, Grey Daturas, Mare etc. Plus more bands that are doing something new or different.

Thursday, August 10, 2006

So I downloaded the new Mastodon album last night and as expected it's fucking amazing. Oh, and no I don't have a problem with downloading the album as I will buy the album the first day it is released as already planned.
This band really can do no wrong. I'm sure there are people out there who might have though that they couldn't have topped 'Leviathan', but after the listening I've put in already, I have to say it's better.
They still have that heavy rock/metal feel, but the songs are way more technical this time round. Some of the riffs and time signatures are just bullshit. Basically they retained all the parts that made 'Leviathan' so brilliant and expanded on those ideas.
I don't think I could describe it properly and do it justice, so I'll just say, 'BUY IT' and leave it at that. You won't be disappointed.

Righto. Well this is mostly just going to be links to songs and artists that I'm feeling at the moment and that I think deserve as much exposure as possible.
Enjoy!

For starters, here's the Mike Patton Breezeblock set from a few weeks back. And a damn fine set it was too.

A video of Chef vs Benga @ the last DMZ night. The two tracks are Loefah - Mud & Skream - Tapped.

I've also been really digging on Faith SFX lately. A newish beatboxer from the UK. Check out "Oh My" from his latest 12" which can be pre-ordered from uptown records.

Lastly, Various Production are a coupla dudes who have been very successful at keeping their identities tip top secret. Apparentlyt being chased by labels such as Planet Mu and Warp, their debut album "The World Is Gone" has just been released and it's real next level stuff. As with any truly amazing group, their music is kinda hard to describe and categorise. Some terms to throw around are sublow, post r-n-b, loungey electro, perhaps even a trip-hop feel to it in parts.
Here's the breezeblock show they did from a while back. Big ups Deapoh at barefiles for hosting this. A king amongst men he is indeed.
